Summary — I hated watching Midsommar — the gore, the unlikeable characters, the constant discomfort — but it is so well made, with great acting and a suffocating atmosphere, that I can’t call it anything but a good movie.
I hated watching Midsommar. Just about every scene made me uncomfortable — the gore is not for me at all, none of the characters are likeable, and the story kind of stops making sense the longer it goes on.
But it is really well made. The acting is great, and the atmosphere is suffocating in a way few horror films pull off. Doing all of this in bright daylight instead of hiding behind darkness is a bold choice, and honestly it is what makes the movie stick with you.
So I am left with the contradiction: a film I hated sitting through that I still think is genuinely good. I will never watch it again, and I would still recommend it. 4/5.
