Signs of a Psychopath · Season 1

More Showcase Than Insight

Summary — Season 1 felt more like a showcase of disturbing people than an insightful examination of psychopathy, with a repetitive structure and surprisingly little explanation of the very signs promised by the title.

I didn’t really like Season 1 of Signs of a Psychopath because I never felt like it actually taught me much about the “signs” of a psychopath. Most of the time it felt more like it was showcasing disturbing people than explaining anything interesting about them.

At points, the tone also felt strangely soft given how grim the material was. I wouldn’t exactly say the show glorified these people, but it sometimes came uncomfortably close to making them seem fascinating without pushing back very hard. One interview, for example, involved a man who was constantly talking on the phone with a girlfriend. It gave this odd impression that people can be drawn to someone like him, but the show barely explored that dynamic. It was just left there as this weird side detail.

The season also felt repetitive. There’s value in seeing patterns across different cases, but this isn’t an academic paper, and I would have preferred more variety instead of repeatedly getting similar cases from slightly different angles.

My biggest issue is that I never found the show’s take very interesting. I’m not even sure what definition of “psychopath” it was using or how confidently that label applied to the people being featured. Overall, it felt more like a presentation of psychopaths than an examination of them.
