Return to Silent Hill

More Than Cheap Horror

Summary — A faithful, unexpectedly layered adaptation that rewards Silent Hill fans, even if its gore and game-like sequencing can alienate newcomers.

I liked Return to Silent Hill more than I expected. By the end, it felt deeper and more symbolic than I thought it was going to be, and I really appreciated how closely it stayed true to the games. At times it genuinely felt like I was watching the game turned into a movie, which is basically what I signed up for.

That said, I think it would be pretty confusing if you hadn’t played the games or weren’t familiar with the way Silent Hill tells its story. If you just sit back and take everything at face value, I can see it coming across like a cheap horror movie. But if you actually think about the symbolism and what the movie is trying to do, there’s a lot more to get out of it.

Some scenes were also just too gross for me—especially the bathroom scene. Overall, though, it was better than I expected and felt like a solid adaptation for people who already understand the world it’s coming from.
